Hyatt Ziva Cancun sits on Punta Cancún, the point where the Hotel Zone curves, surrounded by the Caribbean on three sides. One step off the resort and you’re on Playa Gaviota Azul: wide, powdery white sand, turquoise water, and, importantly, one of the most consistently seaweed-free stretches in the Hotel Zone thanks to the shape of the bay.

The beach is so wide that even though it’s a popular public beach, with a bit of planning (and a bit of Photoshop) you can still create beautiful, clean portraits here.

Cancun Sunset Portrait Sessions

One of the advantages of this stretch of the Cancun Hotel Zone is that it also catches sunset light, not as common as you might think, since most of Cancun’s coastline faces east. Here we don’t have to worry as much about high-rises casting early shadows, which gives us a little longer to work with the fleeting golden late-afternoon light.

For family photography and portrait sessions, it’s genuinely ideal. We can begin about an hour before sunset while still having bright turquoise water, soft light, and blue skies in the background.

Tips for Hyatt Ziva Photography

Even though Playa Gaviota Azul is a spacious beach, it’s understandably popular and can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. I usually recommend scheduling portrait sessions midweek when possible for a calmer atmosphere and cleaner backgrounds.
